What to Do When You're Locked Out of Your Work Account Remotely

Introduction

Being locked out of your work account while working remotely is one of the most disruptive IT incidents a UAE employee can experience. Unlike being in the office where you can walk to IT support, remote lockouts create urgency — especially if you have a client meeting in an hour or a deadline to meet. Account lockouts can happen for many reasons: entering an incorrect password too many times, an expired password th at was never updated, Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) issues when changing phones, or a security-triggered lockout due to suspicious activity.

Understanding what to do quickly — and who to contact — can mean the difference between a 10-minute inconvenience and a lost working day. This guide helps UAE remote workers navigate account lockout scenarios and get back to work as fast as possible.

Step-by-Step: How to Recover Access to a Locked Work Account

Step 1 — Identify what type of account is locked: Is it your Windows login (can't log in to your laptop), your Microsoft 365/email account (can log into Windows but not email or Microsoft apps), or a specific business application? Each requires a different recovery approach.

Step 2 — For Microsoft 365 account lockout: Open a browser and go to portal.office.com or outlook.office.com. If you see "Your account has been locked" or "Too many failed attempts", click the "Forgot my password" link if Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is enabled for your organisation. If SSPR is not enabled, contact your IT helpdesk immediately — they can unlock the account in the Microsoft 365 Admin Center or through Microsoft Entra ID.

Step 3 — For MFA issues (new phone or authenticator app reset): If you recently changed your phone and can no longer complete MFA, contact your IT administrator or managed IT provider. They can disable MFA temporarily while you reconfigure your authenticator app. Do not attempt to bypass MFA yourself — this process must be handled by your IT team to ensure account security.

Step 4 — For Windows account lockout (domain-joined laptop): If your company laptop is joined to your company's Active Directory domain and you are locked out of Windows, you will need to contact your IT support team. They can reset your Active Directory password remotely, after which you may need to connect to the VPN before the new password syncs. Some organisations have self-service password reset portals that work over the internet.

Step 5 — Document what happened: Note the time the lockout occurred, what you were doing, and any error messages you saw. This helps your IT team determine if the lockout was caused by a security incident (such as a brute force attack on your account) that requires further investigation.

Preventing Account Lockouts Before They Happen

The most effective way to prevent account lockouts is to update your password before it expires. When you receive a "Your password will expire in X days" notification from Windows or Microsoft 365, change your password immediately rather than postponing. Forgetting to update your password on all devices (laptop, phone, tablet) after a reset is a common cause of lockouts — a device using the old password repeatedly attempts to authenticate and triggers a lockout.

Set up Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) through your Microsoft 365 administrator. This allows you to reset your password yourself without calling IT, using your registered mobile phone or alternate email as verification. Al Aida IT enables SSPR for all Microsoft 365 clients under our IT AMC service in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, reducing helpdesk calls significantly.
