Slow home internet is one of the most common complaints among remote workers across the UAE. When your Etisalat eLife or du home broadband connection is sluggish, every task that requires connectivity becomes painfully slow — emails take forever to send, files won't upload, video calls freeze, and accessing cloud applications feels like wading through mud. For UAE employees working from home, a reliable, fast internet connection is as critical as having electricity and a working laptop.
The causes of slow home internet are varied — from your ISP's network performance to your router hardware to interference from other devices on your home network. This guide walks through the most common causes and how to diagnose and fix them without needing to call your ISP every time.
Step 1 — Run a speed test: Go to speedtest.net or fast.com and run a speed test while connected to your home Wi-Fi. Note your download speed, upload speed, and ping (latency). Compare these results with the speeds you are paying for according to your Etisalat or du plan. If your actual speeds are significantly lower than advertised, continue to the next steps.
Step 2 — Test via wired connection: If possible, connect your laptop directly to the router using an Ethernet cable and run the speed test again. If speeds are significantly higher via cable than Wi-Fi, the issue is with your Wi-Fi connection rather than the actual broadband speed. Consider moving closer to your router or investing in a Wi-Fi extender or mesh network system.
Step 3 — Restart your router: Turn off your router/modem, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. This clears the router's cache and often resolves transient connectivity issues. Allow 2-3 minutes for the router to fully restart before testing again.
Step 4 — Check for bandwidth-heavy applications: Other devices on your home network consuming bandwidth (streaming, gaming, large downloads) can impact your work connection. Check what other devices are connected to your Wi-Fi and what they are doing. Pause or stop non-essential activities during work hours to free up bandwidth.
Step 5 — Check router placement and interference: Routers provide the best Wi-Fi performance when placed centrally, elevated (not on the floor), and away from microwave ovens, cordless phones, and baby monitors which cause Wi-Fi interference. In Dubai apartments, concrete walls significantly reduce Wi-Fi signal — if your home office is far from the router, consider using a powerline adapter or Wi-Fi mesh system.
If your speed tests consistently show speeds far below your plan's specifications and restarting the router doesn't help, the issue may be with your ISP's infrastructure. Contact Etisalat (e&) at 101 or du at 155 to report the fault. Request a line test to check for signal quality issues between your building's distribution point and your apartment's ONT (optical network terminal). UAE ISPs are generally responsive to business customers and escalate faults quickly when reported properly.
If you are on a fibre broadband plan and experiencing frequent outages or speed drops, ask your ISP to check the optical fibre signal levels at your ONT device. Degraded optical signal is a common cause of intermittent connectivity issues in UAE residential buildings.
